Did you know?

The autumnal equinox marks the arrival of the season of fall, the period of changes leading to the dark of winter.  This year that date was September 22nd.  On the autumnal equinox, day and night are of equal length.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines autumn as “the season of the year between summer and winter, lasting from September to November north of the equator and from March to May south of the equator, when fruits and crops become ready to eat and are picked, and leaves fall.”

American English users usually say “fall” while British English users primarily say “autumn.”

This season was at one time referred to as “harvest”, a word meaning “to gather or pluck.”  This is the time that farmers are harvesting crops for winter storage.  Over time, the word “harvest” fell out of use and the phrase “fall of the leaf” was used to refer to the third season of the year.  Eventually, this was shortened to just “fall.”
