White Bird Battlefield Presented by Ron Gardner

White Bird Battlefield on Highway 95, North of Riggins, South of Grangeville.  This is where the first battle of the Nez Perce War was fought in 1877 and the narration on this video is my personal interpretation of what the officials signs at the historic site tell about what happened here.

OLD WHITE BIRD GRADE ROAD TAKES YOU INTO THE HEART OF THE WHITE BIRD BATTLEFIELD.

Old US-95 north of White Bird, Idaho was built in 1921 and was the first North-South Highway in Idaho due to the rough terrain.  The video below provides a good glimpse of the experience as you drive on Old White Bird Grade Road from the top of the ridge at the north end, and switchbacks that take you lower and lower into the White Bird Battlefield.  You can see current Highway 95, which at 7% is flat by comparison, on the west edge of the canyon. Great drive.  Many motorcyclists, bicyclists and travelers in general, enjoy the historical perspective of this unique roadway.  Continuing south at the bottom takes you right into the little town of White Bird Idaho where you then connect to the Salmon River via White Bird Creek Road or turn left near Silver Dollar Bar to access the main State Hwy 95.
